(Improving School Effectiveness: Louise Stoll)
We are being encouraged to use coaching as a tool to bring about improvements in our own choices through our Strategic Learning Networks. In response to this encouragement, and to the government’s identification of staff development as a key principle in its 5-year plan, we are delighted to offer this major training opportunity to all schools in our regions networks.
Course objectives:
- To come to a common understanding of the term ‘coaching’
- To consider the potential of coaching as a professional development tool in relation to SLNs and MFL departments
- To develop some of the skills needed to be an effective coach

Promoting Languages
across the School
Eva Lamb
In most schools participation in language learning at Key Stage 4 has seen a dramatic decline; in some the number of students taking languages to GCSE is so low that language teachers are forced to teach other subjects or are facing redundancy.
Schools now have to indicate in their SEFs what measures they are putting in place to ensure participation above 50% and they will need to report to OFSTED how they are implementing this statutory requirement.
In most schools the responsibility for ensuring a viable uptake has been placed firmly with the languages department, with language teachers having to develop strategies to encourage pupils to continue their language learning beyond the age of 14. Languages clearly have to shout a lot harder to make themselves heard and to secure their place in the Key Stage 4 curriculum.
This session is designed to support language departments in their efforts to promote languages with a variety of audiences:
- School Management and Governors
- Parents
- Pupils
It will look at a variety of strategies which have been employed successfully by various schools across the country ensuring high uptake of languages post-14.
